Story: Blood in the Water
Year: 989 FY
Characters: Mellir
Warnings: Fratricide, references to war and genocide
Notes: I find it kind of amazing that Mellir now has two AUs revolving around changes to his personal timeline, when he's the least important/interesting person in his family in canon.

Mellir stared at the red swirls coming off his hand, hardly believing they were actually there.

Sure, he knew he'd done it, and sure, he knew he could do better than Kellom--hadn't that been the point, after all? Or at least he'd stop killing everyone.

...not that he'd made a particularly good start on that goal, but that was a minor detail at best.

Then again, maybe the whole thing was a dream. Gods knew he shouldn't have been able to get the drop on Kellom. Mellir knew damn well that, while he was better than everyone thought, it wasn't by much.

He got as much of the blood off his hands as he could, then slipped back into bed. If it was a dream, he'd wake up sometime after noon, like normal, and go visit Vesa. Maybe spend a few days with her, since no one was likely to need him at court.

When he didn't even have time to sleep before the guards came and got him, it started feeling more real.

But what really sold him on the fact that he'd done it--he'd pulled it off, he'd killed his too-perfect brother, he'd actually made a mark on the world, and it was all just beginning because now he was the gods-damned king...

What really sold him on it was the washbasin on his nightstand, and the water turned sunset with his brother's blood.
