A Change in the Routine

Year: 940 FY, 988 FY, 990 FY

You woke in darkness. For a moment, you were confused--this was not your bedroom, this was not your morning.
Then you remembered; the guards had come to fetch you, to lock you away. You were confused again, but this time you just wonder how on earth you managed to sleep at all.
You uncurled and started to pace, counting the steps from one end of the room to the other. You waited for the news.
But when it finally came, you weren't surprised. A part of you knew, had known since they came to get you.
You had just...hoped.

You are down in the training field, running forms the way you usually do, when the message comes.
When they kneel before you, you start to grasp it, really grasp the change, and are surprised at the wave of uncertainty that fills you. You've known this was coming--true, you thought it would be at least a decade yet, but you've prepared for this your entire life.
It doesn't last long, at least, and you don't think anyone noticed.
You regain control of yourself, put the practice blade away and follow the ministers--yours now--back inside, memorizing every moment.
Now it begins.

You will be the one to find them.
You'll find a helmet with a faceplate, join a routine patrol, and go looking.
You'll shut his eyes, grant him dignity, at least. You'll still love him that much. You'll still owe him that much.
You'll promise him you'll learn from his example, but you won't tell him what that means. Safe inside the helmet, you'll weep for just a moment. Then you'll take it off, put on a different mask, and call for help.
Who you are will be gone. You'll only hope to like the king who takes his place.
