He studied himself in the mirror. He'd been of age for years, but it had taken until now to convince his father to let him formally enlist.
It felt stiff, the uniform. Starched and pressed and holding him upright, a reassuring cloth skeleton of duty and purpose.
For the first time in a long time, he felt at ease in his own skin. This was where he needed to be. This was who he needed to be.
The uniform was stiff, yes, the collar still somewhat uncomfortable against his throat, but, despite that, it felt right.
