Notes: This takes place in the Urban Fantasy AU
Taz came to the surface when she heard one of her new friends calling--she kept her word, after all, and promised them help. Especially the children.
This one--boy, about ten, he hadn't given his name. She'd given him a warmth-charm some time before, breathing the feel of her home waters into his skin.
"I need your help," he said, when he saw her. He seemed nervous, and he was just past arm's reach from the water.
Clever boy.
"What d'you need?" she asked.
"You gotta hide me."
That wasn't nerves, then. It was terror. Humans were so hard to read sometimes. "Hide you? From what?"
"I s-saw...th-there's a man, he killed someone, h-he...h-he tore him to pieces, I...he'll find me, I kn-now he will, please..."
Taz's eyebrows shot up to her hairline. "Is he followin' you?"
"I-I don't know!" the boy said, and his voice cracked.
"What's he look like?"
"D-dunno, didn't see, j-j-just heard..."
"...fine. C'mere, I need you closer." She couldn't keep him for long--not unless she wanted to keep him forever--but an hour or so, and then she'd deposit him where she knew decent cops were about, to track down whatever it was he'd seen.
The boy skittered over to the edge of the water and she wrapped her arms around him. She breathed around him, pulling him into the water with barely a ripple.
When she let him go, in case the decent cops couldn't--or wouldn't--act, she'd hit up a few other favors. Leaving the boy out of it, of course, in case her questions reached the wrong ear.
But she didn't care for people frightening those she'd taken under her wing, after all. And whatever else she was, she didn't hold with butchering people.
She cradled the boy close to her chest, and waited, watching the distorted sky, until she was sure it was safer to let him go than keep him with her.
