Story: Damage Control
Year: 976 FY
Characters: Kesshare
Warnings: References to the attack on Isshiri, sociopathic POV, some ableism
Notes: This takes place in the Accident AU

Kessare rested a hand briefly on her son's head--no longer fevered. Good.

A bitter, bitter blow, this. Isshiri had been her insurance--her only insurance. And he and Nolani were annoyingly close, which had put her at risk, as well.

Fortunate, at least, that Nolani was too talented, and Ulore too inclined to underestimate her, or she might have lost all her plans in a heartbeat.

As it was, Isshiri would never rule. Whole in blood, still, but no longer whole in body. Whole in mind, well. That remained to be determined.

And Nolani...Nolani had not suffered enough damage to no longer be considered whole, at the very least. But it left Kesshare's line alarmingly insecure. Though both, presumably, could produce offspring, only one was now a viable heir, and both still had their wildfire years to survive before legitimate heirs could be produced. At least Nolani had kindly removed Ulore from the equation--though rather more gently than he deserved, for daring to attack what was Kesshare's.

Not for the first time, Kesshare wished her husband were still here. He could control the damage to her children, of course, and that was primary--but if he hadn't died when he had, she would have had her third child, that extra piece of insurance, that would make it that much safer to act. She wanted the throne, still, and she would still act, but, with two children not yet entered into their wildfire years, let alone surviving them...

Courting civil war, to disrupt the succession now.

And that was if her children came out of this reasonably intact.

She sighed, and rose from her son's bedside. When he was stable enough, she would remove him from court, hope that that was enough. And if he couldn't hold the throne...well, he was a gregarious, restless child. Diplomacy, or perhaps a military career. In the long run, she would need substantial, loyal talents in both areas. Nolani would go with him--from what Kesshare understood of attachment (and that was quite a bit, nevermind she was incapable of it) separating them at this juncture would make things worse. Though she'd have to wean them off one another eventually, she supposed. Particularly if Isshiri was to have a foreign career.

One step at a time, though. Damage control and doctoring, suppressing irritation at and pointless wishes for her husband. When she had a clearer picture of where her children stood, she could plan her next step.
