Title: Far and Away
Year: 971 FY, 973 FY, 980 FY, 986 FY, 990 FY
Characters: Taz, Del, Fil, and Fes Hantree, Dallu

971 FY

"...How old are you?"

Taz drew herself up as high as she could and stared him full in the eye. Del was a far-distant cousin, one she'd never met, but he had a decent reputation and, more important to her, the Silver Fox was one of the fastest ships her clan had. Taz loved fast ships. "Sixteen."

"...uh-huh." Captain Del didn't quite laugh out loud, but he tugged on her braid a little. "Come back when you're fifteen for real. Then we'll talk."

She stuck her tongue out at his back as he walked away.

973 FY

The Emerald Star wasn’t the kind of ship Taz loved, but Fil was one of the best Hantree captains and the Grand Lady ships were the fastest way to make your name and win a captaincy. Besides, the three mages Fil had weren’t near as powerful or clever as Taz.

"You're fifteen?"

"Yessir. Since yesterday."

Fil smiled. "What’s your line?"

"Parents’re Fes and Rin. Dad and my sisters're Unthreaded, air-mages. No captains recent."

"Huh." He considered, then smiled again. "I always found Unthreaded lines bring luck. And you’ve sure got will to build on it. Welcome to the Emerald Star."

980 FY

Taz stared in disbelief at the paper Fil had handed her. "This can't be real."

He grinned. "It's real. I'm retirin', and suggested you take the Star from me, but Grandfather thinks the Glory'll suit you better."

"I...but...I..." I never dreamed it would be this soon!

"You should go meet your ship," Fil said, gently pushing her out of his cabin. "Go meet him, and get recruitin'. I'll send a couple of my nephews your way to start."

Still stunned, Taz let him push her and left the Star to go find her own glory.

986 FY

"But war’s at least six months away, if Amassa commits," her mother was saying. "Grandfather's not content to sit idle. He wants extractin’ to start before Sorell's brat makes things worse."

"Mages?"

"And anyone else who’ll come."

Taz nodded. She'd expected something like this--the Glory was fast could sail rivers, not just ocean. "I'll have Dallu clear the weather for us, so we can head out right away."

"Good girl," she said, with a faint smile. "You're not to do anything beyond evacuation, though, understood? Too risky for that, we can't back you official."

"Yeah, I'll remember.”

"Good luck."

990 FY

The war was finally over, and she would likely never go home again. She and Dallu were headed north, farther than she'd ever been. She'd been hit hard by the cold, harder than expected, but the beauty of the ice--and the way she was completely surrounded by water, not even feeling it die away against something solid--more than made up for it.

Dallu took her hand. "We're almost there."

She blinked, then squeezed. "Thought you said no outsiders ever got in."

He brushed a strand of hair away from her eyes. "You're special. And I'm with you. Always"
