Story: Being Loved
Year: 977-978 FY
Characters: Mel, Kit
Warnings: Abuse, anti-werewolf prejudice
Notes: This takes place in the Urban Fantasy AU

The first time Kit forgot to let him out of containment was his third full moon after changing, and Mel honestly believed it was a genuine mistake. He was annoyed as fuck--he was thirsty, he wanted to clean up, and he really needed to pee--but he wasn't mad, exactly. Kit looked out for him, he couldn't have meant it maliciously.

Kit had been pretty pissed when Mel had snapped at him, but why shouldn't he be? With all he was doing for Mel.

So Mel apologized for getting mad and went to clean up, and they never mentioned it again.

When Kit found out Mel was going to a support group, he flipped out.

And that was the first time Mel was actually afraid--not of Kit, because he was his brother, but of what would happen if Kit threw him out. Because where else could he go? Werewolves who didn't have any family were one thing, those could usually find caretakers. Mel knew someone, from group, and she was doing okay.

But if you had a family, but were too difficult for them to handle...

Mel didn't sneak out for group anymore. Not even when Kit was out of town.

Despite everything, Mel finished high school. He even got damn good grades. Kit sure as hell seemed proud, and his teachers kept pestering him about college, but he made vague noises about not being able to afford it and closed his eyes and ears to the very real possibility of scholarships.

He wasn't open about his lycanthropy at school, but college admissions staff would know. And, like Kit said, even if they would let him in, what was the point? No job that required a degree would hire him anyway. Waste of time and money, even if it wasn't his.

He got a job at a bookstore, and was able to avoid potential issues by just not working nights. He might have to trade a few shifts, when his hours cut a little too close to sunset for safety, but it hopefully wouldn't be too often.

Mel could help with expenses--they could always benefit from extra income, especially since Kit was a freelance Hunter. So, every two weeks, he deposited his checks right away, and Kit handled all of the bills and everything.

It might not be the life he'd dreamed of, but they did okay, he and his brother.

Kit was late letting him out again six months after graduation. Mel couldn't open the door from the inside, and even if he could, the hinges were a silver alloy that really hurt.

This time, it wasn't an accident--Kit had known ahead of time he might be gone. But, then again, not many people knew what Mel was, and Kit didn't trust them to look after him. And Mel wasn't scheduled to work, so it wasn't really an issue.

After the fourth or fifth hour of staring at the gouged walls, though, Mel couldn't avoid the guilty stab of resentment.

It happened more and more often. Mel started juggling shifts to make sure he wasn't working the day after the full moon, just in case it was a month where he was left for more than a couple hours.

Then his boss caught on. And fired him.

It was his fault, of course. He'd been a werewolf long enough at that point to know how to keep it secret. Kit decided he shouldn't get another job--he obviously couldn't manage it and his lycanthropy. He did some freelance copy-editing instead, and worried that Kit would decide he couldn't handle him anymore.

He got used to it. The worst were months when he was left for over a day--there was water in the room, yeah, but he usually drank most of it while he was changed, and there wasn't any food or medical supplies (he hurt himself sometimes). And anything he tried to sneak in--supplies or entertainment--would get destroyed, and Kit would get pissed.

But Kit loved him, despite being a problem werewolf. And if the price of that was a few empty days in a broken room...even if someone else would take him, he'd much rather stay and be loved.
