Story: Two Years
Year: 972 FY
Characters: Deshell, Fesha
Notes: This takes place in the Urban Fantasy AU.

A year after their marriage, they sat down to talk about kids. They both wanted them--they'd known that before they got married, because obviously that was something they needed to see eye-to-eye on. But that was all they'd settled beforehand. Neither of them wanted kids right away--her just out of nursing school when they married, and the two of them not as financially stable as they could be.

But, after a year, they were comfortable, if not rich--in a position to start discussing the kind of massive changes a growing family would mean.

So they set aside a night when they were both off--not at all an easy feat, since Deshell hadn't made detective yet and Fesha worked in an emergency room--had a nice dinner and settled in on their couch, with a decent bottle of wine and all the papers they thought they'd need.

"All right," Fesha said, setting her glass down on the coffee table. "First question: biological kids or adopted?"

"I'd like biological, at least to start," Deshell said slowly. "But if you don't, that's fine. I do want to have a baby at least once, whatever ages we go with after that."

She nodded. "I'm okay with biokids, but I think we need to hold off longer than we planned if that's what we're going to do."

"Yeah?"

"Money," she said, simply. "We're okay as we are now, but I think we should save at least another year or two to plan for maternity leave, and if we're going to have an infant, I'd like to stay home more than I do. That means less hours."

Deshell nodded. "Yeah, okay, that makes sense. So, we save two years, then stop using protection?"

Fesha nodded. "Sounds like a plan to me." She hesitated. "I...do think, if you're willing to have a big family...we should adopt, too. And maybe look into fostering."

He swirled his wine a little, considering. "It might not be easy to get certified," he said. "Given..."

She winced a little, and picked up her glass again. "Yeah..."

"And I want to wait until whatever biokids we have are at least three or four before we bring fosters in."

Fesha nodded. "That's doable. Okay, biokids to start, then fostering and adopting any kid that fits with us." She thought for a moment. "I...think it might be a good idea, at that point, for me to maybe work in a private practice, or maybe a school, instead of a hospital. That way at least one of us will have dependable, sane hours. Especially while whatever kids are little."

"If you're willing to do that, yeah, probably good. It'll help us with certification and getting adoptions approved, probably," Deshell agreed.

Which was a good point, but hadn't been her primary reason. "How many do we want?"

"At least two," Deshell said. "No more than five."

Another thing they saw eye-to-eye on. "Including fosters?"

"Yeah," he said.

She smiled. "Okay. We're really going to do this?"

He smiled back. "Yeah. Two years, then we're going to do this."

She set her glass down and shifted to lean against him, and he wrapped his arms around her.

Two years, that were probably going to be a lot of long hours and late nights. But, in the end...it would all be worth it.
