Story: A Charm
Year: Equivalent 983 FY
Characters: Taz, Selmid
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. This takes place in the Urban Fantasy AU
"It's gettin' cold out."
Selmid jumped, and turned. There was a lady in the water, bare dark arms folded, chin resting on her hands. She smiled at him.
"Where're you wanderin'?"
"I...dunno," he finally said, staying cautiously back. It was getting cold, and was probably colder in the water, and she was floating in it. She was probably something special, and that was usually dangerous.
"I'm not gonna hurt you," she said. He caught a glimpse of a tail breaking the surface behind you. "You're all alone, aren't you."
A mermaid.
Dumbly, he nodded.
She tilted her head, considering. "C'mere."
He inched closer. Even scary mermaids didn't usually hurt kids. Not that he'd heard, anyway. No one ever mentioned one floating around this far north.
She pushed herself up, so she was half out of the water, and pulled him down to kiss his forehead. "Stay warm and dry, kid. And you need anythin', come to the water and ask for Taz."
She slipped away into the water before he could answer. He blinked, bewildered, at the barely-rippled surface. Owing a mermaid a favor probably wasn't much better than owing one to a fairy, but...
He did feel warmer.
He backed away from the water, and went to find Shura. Maybe whatever the mermaid had done would help his friend, too.
