Story: Into Shadow
Year: 980 FY
Characters: Taz and Kes Hantree
Warnings: References to violence and blood-magic
The attack from the Lefret ship had come out of nowhere--as far as Kes (or any of the crew) knew, they weren't at odds with the other Clan. The Captain had gone down quick, when one of the masts was damaged and a yardarm had fallen on top of him. Taz had taken command and shoved the Star up the river. The ship was shallow for a Great Lady, and the Lefret ship couldn't follow them up.
That had been three days ago, and the Captain hadn't woken up since. Nothing Kes could do--the ship didn't have an official medic, but she had some training so had taken over tending to him and anyone else who needed it--had helped.
"How's he doin'?" Taz asked. She'd come in so Kes could change some bandages and check on a broken arm.
"Not good," Kes said. "Here, you're done for now."
Taz rubbed the back of her neck with her uninjured hand. "Damn."
"What are we gonna do?"
"We'll have to go upriver."
Kes sucked in a breath. Upriver could only mean one thing.
Heartwood.
"You sure?"
Taz nodded. "Been thinkin', since he didn't wake up quick. They can fix him, no one else can..."
"Yeah..."
There were two things that came out of Heartwood--stories of amazing healing, and whispers of unimaginable horrors. Kes couldn't help but focus on the second.
Taz was still talking. "If this bit with Lefret's gonna get big...he's one've our best fightin' Captain's. We'll need him," Taz said. "And I'm not good for Great Ladies. And we all need to be back together to get home, if we get hit again..."
All of that made sense.
Kes looked aside, trying to peer through the wood of the hull to the forest, a day or so upriver, where all those legends waited under the silent trees. "Thanks for lettin' me know." Since she, as the closest thing to a medic the ship had, would have to come in with Taz if they had to abandon the ship for one of the smaller escape boats.
Taz nodded. "Just gotta tell the others now." She gave a slightly crooked smile, grimmer than usual. "Let me know if there's any change."
"Of course." Kes watched her sister limp off, then went back to trying to stare through the wood at the hope and horror that waited for them.
