Story: Jealousy
Year: 982 FY
Characters: Dallu, Taz, Lir Hantree
"So, how come you get a navigator? You've barely been Captain two years."
Taz rolled her eyes in the other captain's general direction and refused to dignify that with an answer. In part because he had a point, gods alone knew why Dallu had picked her, but mostly because Lir was her least favorite relative, and unfortunately one of her closest. He'd been given a ship at the same time she was, and had never gotten over the fact he was ten years older than her and had been sailing since as young an age. He didn't like being shown up.
"I'm talkin' to you, you could at least answer. You're not even from a good line."
Taz clenched her fists. She was sick of that, too.
"You could ask me directly," Dallu said, mildly, joining them.
Lir jumped, but Taz relaxed, and grinned at him. "Nice of you to join us, Dallu."
He smiled back and bowed slightly, then turned to Lir. "You're wondering why I picked her instead of you?"
Taz grinned wider. She didn't know Dallu very well yet, but he had a talent for wrapping himself in an air of mysticism and keeping his eyes blank. It was clearly bothering Lir.
"Y-yeah," he finally said. "I got more experience, more rank..."
"And you are a petty jealous jackass," Dallu finished for him. "Captain Taz is none of those things."
Lir glowered at him, and started to retort, but Taz cut him off.
"'Sides. We got the exact same captainin' experience, Lir." She grinned broadly at him. "And my ship an' I treat Dallu better'n you ever would. So kindly shut up."
Dallu touched her arm briefly, and smiled enigmatically at Lir. "It was a pleasure meeting you nonetheless. Captain, Master Kor wants to speak with you."
"Got it," Taz said. "Seeya, Lir. Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky with the next navigator who wanders down here." Without letting him respond, she followed Dallu out of the bar, quite pleased with how they'd shut her annoying cousin down.
