Since I work with Dad--he’s the Mayor now, but he couldn’t come this year--he sent me to Asendar to make Lester’s report to the Grand Duke. My appointment is later this afternoon, so I stop in a bookstore to kill time.
"...be over soon."
I freeze.
This can't be real, not after twenty years.
If he sees me, he doesn't know me. But I know him.
There's a sickening weight in my chest. I recognize him from coins the sailors spend.
The Lord of the Islands is my nightmare, and there's nothing I can do to stop him.
