Story: Instinct
Year: 987 FY
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Kes
Warnings: Discussion of Islander prejudices and ostracism/the darker side of their society.
Every instinct Kes has is telling her she shouldn’t trust Mel--he won’t give his Clan name, but his accent, even softened by years away, clearly tells he was born and raised in one. The fact he’s not with them anymore, the fact he won’t name them, means he ran or was cast out. And people who used to have a Clan but don’t anymore are liars and oathbreakers. Everyone knows that.
Of course, everyone also knows that she, being Unthreaded, is worth next to nothing, and lowers the value of everyone around her. Instinct says Kes herself shouldn’t be trusted--not ‘cause she’s a liar, but ‘cause she just plain doesn’t belong.
Plus, if she closes her eyes and pretends she knows his name, pretends he had an acceptable reason for being in Feredar--not just a good one, because ‘good’ and ‘acceptable’ don’t always line up, which is why it’s bad form to complain when caught stealing, no matter how great the need…that part knows that he’s a good man.
So she’ll leave him be, let him make his own choice where to go from here--he ain’t Hantree, or she’d’ve heard of him, so she can’t go to him direct--but if he wants to come home…
Fuck instinct. And fuck inter-Clan politics. Kes knows better. Someone’s gotta stand up for the outsiders. So, if he wants to come home, and if Taz won’t speak for him, she will.
