Story: Reaching Out
Year: 991 FY
Characters: Kes
When Taz swam away, to look for adventure in the north, Kes missed her, like breathing. But she didn't follow, not then. Mermaids (at least their kind of mermaids) were tropical creatures--the northern cold held her back.
But then the messages started trickling down. Taz was happy, carving out a niche for herself on the edge of a city with a huge extranormal population. And Kes started to plan her own trip--maybe not to stay, but at least to see.
Taz's latest message said she had found a wizard to marry, and that was the final push she needed. There was an Occasion now, and it had been far too long since they'd met. And Kes had her own stories to tell--of sunken ships and buried treasure, and all the things they used to do together.
But the truth was, she understood a little now--what mermaids were, and all their traditional pursuits, it started to get boring after a while. And Taz had found love, if not adventure, and, well, it might be nice to share it, for a while.
So Kes said goodbye to her warm, clear, native waters and sent herself north for her sister's wedding.
