Story: Our Secret
Year: 981 FY
Characters: Isshiri
"You know my mom's gonna kill us, right?"
Isshiri's dragon chirps from his shoulder. :The camel's fine, and you said she doesn't even like this one that much.:
"True. As long as we get him back before anyone notices..."
:Exactly!:
He grins to himself and pats the camel's neck. "Think we're far enough out now?"
:Yes,: she says, and launches off of his shoulders, her claws digging in just a little. He winces slightly--but, then again, training her out of that wouldn't have much point, since she'll be too big to perch like that before too long.
"Why'd you want to come out here, anyway?" he asks.
:Look! Look at the way the sun dances on my scales, isn't it amazing:?
He slides off the camel and makes sure its staked down properly, then shades his eyes to watch her dancing in the air. "It is," he agrees. "You are."
She chirps again and comes to land on his shoulder. :So are you. Even if you haven't even bothered to ask me my name yet.:
He shakes his head. "You're right. I didn't ask your name."
:Well?: she demands, twining around his neck to look him right in the eyes, their noses almost touching, holding onto his shoulders by her tail alone and he's convinced she'll fall. :Ask!: she says, imperiously.
"Okay, what's your name?"
:Misalin,: she says, triumphantly, then wriggles to get into position to take off again. :Now, follow, the camel will be fine and I wanna show you something.:
"Okay," he says. He double-checks the tie just in case (Mamma really will kill him if one of her camels runs away on his watch), then follows the flashes of sunlight off Misalin's scales, until they suddenly disappear. "...Misalin?" he calls, uncertainly.
:Down here!:
He almost falls into the hidden depression in the sands, catching himself on the edge by long practice of knowing when his balance is about to fail him. He makes a light so he can see how far it is to the bottom, ready to use all the bad words he's overheard from Nolani's latest favorite at Misalin for tricking him, then stops, eyes widening.
It's a tiny cave, probably big enough for one adult to sleep comfortably, if they don't have too much stuff, buried in the sand off any of the main paths, covered entirely with colorful, translucent crystals. "Oh," he breathes, watching his flame magnified through the crystals.
:Isn't it amazing?: Misalin says. :And you're right, 'cause no one knows about it, so it can be our secret place. And look--: She nudges at the back of the cave, and the wall crumbles just a little. :Pretty sure there's more back there. Lots to explore, right, 'Sshiri?:
"Yeah," he says, then drops to the floor and scoops her up. "It's our place."
She nuzzles him briefly. :Next time, we'll bring water an' stuff but we should probably take the camel back before your mamma notices.:
Oh. Right. Mother. Camel. No time for super-secret special glowy caves with his new bondmate. "Right. Yeah. Okay. But we'll come back soon, right?"
Misalin chirps. :As soon as we can.:
They climb out of the cave and just barely get the camel back before Mother comes to inspect her stables, and while she gives them a suspicious look, she can't prove anything. So Isshiri writes this whole adventure off as a success.
Well, not quite the whole thing. Because, after all, it has barely begun.
