Story: Admiration
Characters: Riluke
Warnings: References to war and character death

If Riluke were to list the five people she admired most in the world, the first to come would naturally be her grandfather--wise and calm, such a rarity in a firemage, he gave her her first lessons in diplomacy, and he does his best to subtly drive those around him to excel.

The second on her list would be, at least in the privacy of her thoughts, her aunt Kesshare--sharp as a knife and wickedly smart, her aunt refuses to let anything get in her way and she has all the talent and the drive to achieve her goals.

She admires Kor Hantree as well, perhaps because, when she was first in the Islands and slightly unsure of herself, he reminded her a little of her grandfather--but he is much rougher around the edges, much more of a dominating personality; where Amassa persuades, Kor commands.

In a slightly uncomfortable way, she even admires the great global enemy of her youth--King Sorell, who was a fierce protector with misguided principles, a man she sometimes wishes she could have met in person, even though he would have hated her on sight, just to see if his reputation really was earned.

Of course, she admires Kes Hantree--the only woman she has ever met who is a match for her in terms of how she has turned her defects into strengths, in how she has taken what her people says should be a shame and turned it into pride; Kes is her closest friend, and they would never have stayed that way without strong, mutual admiration.

But, to tell the truth, if she had to pick the one person she admired most in the world, it wouldn't be any of the rulers and commanders who have shaped her life--it would be a lost, lonely boy who gave up everything for love, twice; whose greatest fear was that his pain would be a weapon against someone else; who died a martyr on the field of war, far away from home.

Riluke can easily choose the five people she admires most, but her hero will always be Mel Artwick.
