Story: Rumors and Good Wine
Year: 1005 FY
Characters: Riluke, Kes
"What did you bring me?" Riluke asked, after letting the newly-appointed Head of Clan Hantree into her home. Kes snuck over most nights she was in residence, though this was the first since her promotion--probably to help Riluke avoid the appearance of bias, which was helpful.
There was, of course, already a certain bias from her nation towards Clan Hantree, given the close ties her cousin had formed with Kes's sister during the War, but that didn't matter. If there was one thing both the bastard Ambassador and the Unthreaded Head knew, it was the value of appearances.
"Rumors and good wine," Kes said, with a smile, tossing her a bottle. More things they both knew to value.
And it was, Riluke could tell from a quick glance at the label, very good wine. Of all her contacts here, Kes had some of the best taste.
"Thank you," she said, setting it aside until she had an appropriate event for such a vintage. "What are you drinking tonight?" Years of practice reading body language--and long contact with the Head--told her that Kes wanted something stronger than wine.
"I've been meetin' with Lord Kit all day," Kes answered.
Riluke reached for a particular bottle of rum--it tasted like a mix of sugar, piss, and gravel, but had the highest alcohol content in her supply. "And what is your fearless leader up to lately?"
"You show me yours, I'll show you mine," she said.
Riluke laughed, and raised her hands in surrender. "Fair enough." The two of them traded in influence and rumor, of course, but never--at least on nights like this--in serious secrets. She poured two glasses, as she didn't have anything scheduled for tomorrow and Kes was fun to drink with, and slid one across the table. "Now. I have the wine, but you also mentioned rumors?"
Kes grinned, and the two of them settled back for what promised to be a very long and productive night of gossip.
