Story: Mellir's Aunt
Year: 968 FY
Characters: Mellir, Peroll
Warnings: Underage drinking, imminent playing with fire while drunk.
Notes: This is the incident referenced in The Cover-up.

"Jus' think 'bout it," Peroll said, as the two of them drifted down the street from the palace to his family's house. "Talkin' to dead people. There's no one you wanna talk to?"

"I dunno," Mellir said. "I mean, my dead sisters're just babies, not that interested in granparents're uncles're--ooooh."

"Yeah?" Peroll blinked at him.

"Mom's biggest sister--not Rema, th'other one, I f'rget her name--she was a traitor or somethin', died in prison. No one talks 'bout her."

"Oooooh," Peroll said, then stopped. "We could totally do it."

"Yeah? You know how?"

He shook his head. "Nope. But I know it involves fire and stuff. We could prob'ly find a book tellin' us how at the right shop."

Mellir grinned. "We dunneed a shop."

"Yeah?"

"I know which window the Minister've Culture leaves unlocked."

Peroll grinned. "Let's do it. Tonight."

"Tonight?"

"S'a full moon, which is best, yeah?" He shrugged. "Plus you'll prob'ly forget this t'morrow, your memory when you're drunk's not that great."

Mellir shoved his friend, who was drunk enough to go staggering. "You okay?"

Peroll laughed. "No blood! C'mon, let's go break in and talk t'your aunt."

Mellir hesitated half a second--it was probably a bad idea, and Keta was always telling him to think--but how could he decide Important Things if he didn't know what the traitor in his family had actually done?

"Yeah. Let's go meet my aunt."
