Story: Out of Hand
Year: 958 FY
Characters: Mellir, Keta, Kellom
Warnings: Kids fighting leading to a broken arm

Kellom didn't mean to break his brother's arm. Honest. It was Mellir's fault for starting the stupid fight by calling the little sword Papa had made special for him stupid, which it wasn't so Kellom had to hit him, and then Mellir hit back and gave him a bloody nose so he had to pin him down, and then Keta got involved and accidentally made it worse, but...

He really really didn't mean it.

"HEY!"

Kellom looked up, slightly guilty-faced, but he didn't let go of Mellir's arm. Especially when he saw it was just Keta there to yell at them, not even Deva, let alone Mamma or Papa.

"What are you two doing?" she asked.

"Get off me!" Mellir yelped.

"Nuh-uh," Kellom insisted. "He started it."

"Did not!"

"Did too!"

"Did n--"

"I don't care," Keta said, "who started it. Kellom, let go, you're gonna break his arm."

"You're not the boss of me!"

"If you don't do it by when I reach one," Keta said, putting her hands on her hips, "I'm gonna yell for Mamma. Three...two..."

Kellom considered the possibility for about half a second before finally letting go. "It's your fault we're in trouble, stupidhead," he muttered.

"Is not!" Mellir yelled and tried to tackle him again.

Well, that Kellom couldn't put up with. So maybe he sidestepped and pulled Mellir's arm behind him again, 'cause otherwise Mellir would've hit him again. Except he pulled too hard and there was this snappy noise and then Mellir was actually crying.

"MAMMA!" Keta yelled at the top of her lungs, and Kellom winced. She was louder than the baby.

"Sorry," he whispered, then scooted away from his brother.

He really, really didn't mean it. It wasn't his fault, just it all got out of control. And he said he was sorry.

But he did make the actual breaking happen, even if Mellir busted his nose first. So he didn't argue when Mamma made him stay in his room for three days or even when Papa took away his pretty new sword. At least not out loud. Because he didn't start it, and he didn't mean it.

But he made the fight bigger, and he did pull Mellir's arm too far, so maybe it was just a little bit his fault.
