Salamanders were Kit's favorite playthings.
They were squirmy and slimy, and fun to capture, and he could make them last a long time, not like with birds.
He had one, that he'd caught like two months ago, and pinned it to the floor in his room. He could spend hours, cutting off a limb and watching it grow back, watching it writhe, forcing flies and spiders down its throat.
When it stopped growing, he knew it was dead, and threw it out with the rest of the trash. It didn't matter anymore.
And he could always find another.
