Story: Don't Look Back
Year: 987 FY
Characters: Riluke, Mel
"Do you miss it?"
Riluke paused, a little surprised at Mel's question. "Did you?"
He touched his collar lightly. "Every day. Even before..."
She nodded, and turned away to think about it. She closed her eyes and breathed, imagining the desert wind tearing across her face, the smooth glass under her feet, the fresh relief of cool water and bright flowers in the palace garden, the taste of sweet dates and sharp mint and tangy lemon, of spiced meat in bite-sized pieces, so rare it practically melted on her tongue, and all that was left was the spice.
"Every day."
