"Are you sure you don't want your dad here for this?"

Isshiri shook his head. "Nuh-uh." Daddy couldn't be his doctor for this--he wasn't the best, so he'd asked a lot of questions and found the best, as soon as Isshiri was ready to try. And he could've asked 'Lani, but she would get upset when he fell, which the new doctor had explained he probably would a lot. And everyone else--except Kira, who was too little--just talked around him about stuff like this, and would probably only talk to the doctor instead of him.

But he wanted someone there. So he'd asked Riluke, because she didn't, and she'd said yes.

"All right, Highness," the doctor said, coming in with a kind of scary-looking thing, all metal and leather and...scary. Isshiri reached over and gripped Riluke's hand as tight as he could, and she let him. "This might be a little bit too long," the doctor said, kneeling in front of him. "But we'll try, and if it is, we'll fix that for next time, all right?"

Isshiri couldn't make the words right, just stared at the metal. So he swallowed, and nodded, and held tight to Riluke while the doctor tied the metal thing on where his disappeared leg stopped, right below his knee.

The two of them--Riluke and the doctor--pulled him up, and it felt so weird, like he was standing but he shouldn't be, like there was something but nothing holding him up. Like clear glass, only with feeling through it instead of seeing.

"That's good, 'Sshiri," Riluke said.

"All right, that looks pretty even," the doctor said, after studying him for a minute "How does the cup feel?"

"F-fine," Isshiri said, uncertain.

"Why don't we try to take a few steps, and then we'll see?"

Isshiri swallowed again, and squeezed Riluke's hand.

"I'm right here, all right?" she said.

He nodded, and took a step. Without falling.

"Wait a minute--" the doctor said, but he didn't care. He'd done it without falling, he could do it again.

Or maybe not.

Riluke kept a hold of his hand, but she couldn't keep him all the way up. "Want to get up by yourself, or do you want me to help?" she asked.

Isshiri took a deep breath, and squeezed her hand. She got that, and pulled.

He peeked up at the doctor, once he was up again. "I...i-it slid..."

The doctor smiled. "All right. Now we know how to fix it for next time."

Isshiri nodded again, and squeezed Riluke's hand. "Can...can we try tomorrow instead?"

The doctor nodded. "Whenever you're ready."

Isshiri couldn't watch when the doctor unfastened and pulled off the metal thing. Riluke helped him back into the chair. "I'll be back tomorrow," Isshiri promised, sounding a lot less sure than he really felt.

'Cause it felt bad right now, like he'd never get it right, but...he'd taken that one step, by himself (with Riluke and the doctor holding him up a little, but still) so he'd do it again. Even if he couldn't right now, 'cause it was scary again and the metal thing looked more like it wanted to stab him than hold him up.

But every day got a little better, so this would probably be better too. Even if he fell down again. He'd get it right eventually. Even if it hurt and scared him lots until then. As long as he kept trying...

It wasn't this tomorrow. But it would be tomorrow, eventually. Some tomorrow, he'd get it right.
