Dallu felt Taz's hand slide into his, and he braided his fingers with hers.
"I don't want to stay here anymore," she said, quietly.
"Something happen in there?" Someone he guessed was Mel's brother had stormed out in a quiet, eerily contained rage a few minutes earlier. And informing someone a close relative, oathbreaker or not, had died was all too likely to go horribly wrong.
She shook her head. "Not exactly. I just..." She squeezed his hand lightly. "Clan won't be happy when we marry. Can't deal with that on top of..."
"So it's when now?" he asked, with a gentle teasing tone. He didn't address the other part of it--Taz wasn't furious anymore that she'd been saved from her sinking ship, but that didn't mean she was feeling it any less, just differently.
She quirked a smile. "Yeah. Supposin' you still want to, of course."
Damn right he still did. He'd been hinting that he wanted marriage for years, but Islanders almost never married outsiders. Hantree hardly ever even married outside the Clan. The fact that she was now not only acknowledging his hints but talking about when...
He raised her hand to his lips and kissed it softly, not answering in words.
She trailed her other hand along his cheek, apparently not wanting to let go any more than he did. "Then we will. Soon's I can convince Grandfather. I'm not lookin' to abandon or break faith, just..."
"Find our own way?"
"Yeah."
