Story: Only the Good Die Young
Year: 982 FY
Characters: Taz, Dallu
Warnings: Space piracy
Notes: This takes place in the In SPACE AU.
There was an incredibly loud crunching noise, as the airlock was yanked open without any of the safeguards locked in place.
Fuck me, Dallu thought, dimly. Just his luck--backup navigator on a freighter that didn't really need one, essentially ending up doing whatever random shit needed done. And the airlock was failing.
This was not the life I wanted. He braced himself for a very unpleasant death before he noticed that there wasn't any tugging, rushing sensation, no feeling of being scrambled from the inside out, no suffocation.
Whatever did this had applied a vacuum seal from the outside.
Pirates.

One of her men who'd beaten her down had already subdued and restrained a crew member, must've been by the hatch when they broke in. Taz studied him for a minute. Badly patched flight suit, no jewelry, cheap haircut. No ransom. But his badge indicated he was a navigator. Hers had ditched her not two months ago.
It wouldn't be hard to clear up the knockout misunderstanding, and she could beat whatever his current bosses were paying.
She nodded to her associate, who hauled the navigator through the hatch, then headed into the freighter to make sure it was hers.

Dallu wasn't quite sure what had happened. Probably because his head was still fuzzy, but the pirate captain had offered him money--a lot of money--if he'd work for her. She'd promised to leave him behind, no harm, no foul, at their next stop if he didn't want to. And, to be fair, piracy wasn't exactly why he'd gone to flight school.
But...
He'd heard her name before--anyone signing on with a private freighter learned the names of the best pirates. Hantree was fair, did not allow captives to be abused, and took care of her people.
He could do worse.

Dallu turned out to be one of the best investments Taz had ever made. She was just damn lucky no one else caught on before she got her chance. He was smart, fast, memorized her system inside a week.
And he flirted with her, adorably awkward.
She'd learned to pick out the ones who flirted to suck up or because they thought it was a requirement. He wasn't either. She was half-convinced he didn't even realize she knew, until she, on impulse, kissed him one morning when they were sitting side by side, captain and navigator, planning her next heist.

Dallu had set out to be an honest trader, using his skills to get from Point A to Point Z as fast and safe as possible.
Taz had brought him onto the Morning Glory because she needed a navigator and he needed money.
Dallu had accepted her offer because he needed the job, and she was charming and honorable and beautiful.
Taz liked that he was smart and talented, and the way his hair fell across his eyes when he was concentrating.
They understood each other more than anyone would have guessed, and together they took the universe by storm.
