Characters: Fesha
Halloween means a lot of irritations for Fesha. It means finding somewhere to hide the candy so the kids don't overindulge. It means either complaints about recycled costumes or absurdly overpriced new ones, since she can’t sew. It means cleaning up after Deshell carves the pumpkin.
But it also means pumpkin seeds--doused in oil and sea salt, cayenne and fresh garlic, baked at 300 for forty-five minutes, better than popcorn, making the house smell like fall the way gingerbread makes it smell like Christmas.
She puts up with the candy, the costumes, the carving, just to have the seeds.
