Nida swallowed the wine and watched her h--the King's eyes. It would show there first. After thirteen years on the throne, he was an expert at controlling his face. He had to be.
First he looked confused.
Then he choked and fell to the floor. His glass fell with him, in slow motion, red winedrops splattering the carpet like leaves. She caught it before it broke, and took his hand.
He convulsed once, twice, three times. She refused to let go until he stopped, cloudy blue eyes staring up at her, holding nothing.
She dropped his hand and screamed.
