Queen Nolani of the City of Glass, Dowager Queen of Feredar, kisses her final favorite goodnight and sends him away to sleep. While she is hardly celibate, she hasn't let a lover stay after since Andrell and Lonura...her husband and her longest, dearest favorite...
Nolani finger-combs her hair, long silver waves spilling over her pillows. An ache builds in her jaw and spreads down to her chest, growing into a pressure that swallows everything.
It fades, and she dreams of Andrell and Lonura, young again, waiting for her, and then fades into a soft shimmer of starlight on silver hair.
