Story: Sparks
Year: 1012 FY
Characters: Taz Hantree, Dal, Isshiri, Roneli

"Mom! Mom, look!"

Taz turned to see what her son was pointing at. She did a lot of the sentry runs these days, especially now that Dal was sixteen and old enough to help her--he'd inherited her thread, the way his sister had their father's.

Dal had spotted a little boat off to the southeast. Probably not carrying more than two or three people and their supplies, but still something she had to check out and try to push them away from the glaciers. For their own safety, as well as the people she was protecting.

"Hello there! Who's in the boat?"

"Captain Hantree?"

"...Isshiri?"

"What the hell're you doin' all the way up here, kid?" Taz asked, once she'd gotten close enough that they could actually talk. "Tryin' to get yourself killed?"

Isshiri shook his head. "No. No, I'm just glad I ran into you and not a sentry who wouldn't know me..."

"What's goin' on, then?" Taz studied his boat, then held up a hand to keep him from answering. "Hang on. Dal, help me pull it closer, this'll go better'f they're on ours."

"Yes, Mom," he said, and helped her with the boat, pulling it within easy reach and holding it steady so Isshiri could come join them.

He bent down to pick something up that was hidden from view behind a pile of supplies.

When he joined them, Taz got a good look--a little girl, wrapped in about a dozen blankets, maybe about three.

"This is my daughter, Roneli," he said. "She's why I came up here."

Taz froze the boats in place so the two of them could talk properly. She left Dal in charge of watching the horizon for other perimeter breaches.

"Why come up here with the kid? Does your family know about her? Riluke didn' say anythin' about her..."

"No, my family doesn't know," Isshiri said. "It's...sort of complicated. But I came up here because...well, she's sparking, but they're not my sparks."

She blinked at him. "What d'you mean?"

"It's more like...static."

"You think she's a lightnin' Unthreaded?" Taz asked.

He nodded. "She doesn't work fire, I've tried to play the usual games with her, and I thought...well, I thought I'd bring her up here. I know you and Dallu, and I thought I could get him to confirm it."

Before Taz could respond, the little girl stirred. "Daaaaddy, it's cold."

Isshiri's attention was immediately drawn to her. "Give me a second, sweetheart." He closed his eyes and Taz felt a heat bubble expanding around them.

The girl--Roneli--beamed, then peaked over at Taz and ducked behind Isshiri, suddenly shy.

"Heya, little one," Taz said. "My name's Taz, I know your daddy from years an' years ago."

She looked up at Isshiri, uncertain, but he smiled. "Why don't you show Captain Taz your sparks, sweetheart?"

"Okay, Daddy." Roneli pulled a hand out of the blankets and wrinkled her nose, concentrating. About a dozen blue sparks leapt from one finger to the next.

Definitely lightning-sparks. She'd seen that happen uncountable times in her daughter's hands.

"I'll take you into the city," Taz told Isshiri quietly. "Dallu'll know what to do from there."
