Victory
Story: Victory
Year: 989 FY
Characters: Taz Hantree
Once she'd captured the captain, the fighting had stopped quick enough. The captain hadn't given her his name or anything, seemed rather shock that a woman half his age with a ship half the size of his had managed to beat him. Rather amusing, he was.
She'd passed him off to Dallu, then broke into his cabin. She wanted to find the ship's name and origin, most important, as well as any useful information about other ships Feredar had bought or bargained for.
It took her a minute to collect all the papers--it looked like he'd left most of the important, official ones she was immediately interested in on his desk, and they'd scattered during the fighting.
The ship was identified as the Victory, built in Ketarre. The captain was identified as Lirren, also from Ketarre. He had a letter of marque from King Kellom, making him a Commander in Feredar's navy.
Taz sat down slowly. True, the Victory was a thoroughly impressive ship, for one not from the Islands--a little bit smaller than the Emerald Star, though that didn't mean anything for the comparative rank of the captain. Plenty of first-time Islander captains were given Great Ladies, after all. And it had looked like this was Lirren's only ship when she'd run across him. She reread the letter of marque again, to be absolutely certain she hadn't misunderstood.
There was no mistake. She'd just captured one of the highest-ranked military officials serving Feredar.
She shook her head to clear it, turning her focus on the rest of the papers. There were several indicating that the Victory wasn't the only ship Ketarre had given Feredar. Lirren wasn't just a turncoat with a pretty ship to bring to Kellom's cause.
She gathered up the rest of the papers and stuffed them into her bag. She could go over them in more detail later, after she'd gotten set up to drag her prize back home. But she already knew two things were certain--her future advancement, and the fact that the War had gotten a hell of a lot more complicated.
