Title: Anniversary
Year: 987 FY
Characters: Princess Nolani, Lonura

It was amazing.

Nolani could hardly believe it she'd made this long with Lonura without needing someone new to fall in love with. She wasn't sure that meant she had more control over her inner fire or if it meant she had simply found ways to prolong the infatuation stage. Either way, she'd made it six months with a favorite for the first time ever.

She'd realized what the dates meant last night, and realized she should find something to give to Lonura--there had been plenty of presents over the last six months, of course, but this one had to be special. So she'd spent the last several hours running around, trying to finish making a pretty pair of earrings--she collected them, the way she collected music, which Nolani didn't know how to make--in Lony's favorite color in time for when they were planning to meet for dinner.

She ran into the courtyard about ten minutes late. Lonura was playing something aimless on her tanbur, so at least she hadn't given up hope. "I'm sorry, I had to finish something up..."

Lonura smiled and set the instrument aside. "It's fine, you're not that late." She stood up and kissed Nolani softly.

Nolani kissed back, then pulled her over to the falling-light fountain. "I have something for you."

Lonura arched an eyebrow. "Oh?"

Nolani pulled the little box out of her pocket.

Lonura's eyes widened. The box alone was an astounding gift--made of teak, which was not only wood but wood that grew nowhere near the desert. She very carefully took it from Nolani, and opened it.

The earrings were yellow glass hearts, in a silver setting. They weren't exactly the same size--Nolani didn't have the patience the real jewelers did--but she thought they'd turned out pretty enough.

"We've been together six months. I wanted to give you something special."

Lonura shut the box with care and set it on the bench. She took Nolani's hand and pressed it to her lips. "They're perfect. Thank you. I have something for you, too."

Nolani blinked. She hadn't quite expected Lonura to be tracking the days quite as closely as she was. "Yeah?"

Lonura picked up the teak box again and pulled her over to where she'd left the tanbur. "Here..."

Nolani hadn't noticed the wrapped package on the bench when she'd come in, she'd been so focused on her own gift.

It was a very fine--near sheer--muslin overdress, carefully embroidered with her own favorite flowers, in vibrant reds and golds. "This is beautiful," she said, squeezing her favorite's hand.

"I'm glad." Lonura kissed her again. "Happy anniversary. I hope we have many more."

Nolani didn't answer in words, just kissed her back.
