Story: Swan and Serpent
Rating: R
Characters: Nida, Rema
Warnings: Character death, unhappy sibling relationship, espionage and marriage for politics, attempted assassination, oblique references to the general situation in Feredar.
Nida is the swan, grace and beauty hiding a vicious streak others like to pretend she doesn't have; it's no wonder the young King picks her.
Rema is the serpent, hiding in the brush, waiting for her chance to strike--more obviously dangerous, and she never really wanted her sister's path, anyway; only attempted it because Mother said so.
Nida is the swan, regal and elegant--and it turns out, fiercely loyal to her mate, and drawing her lines in all the wrong places, biting the hands that fed her all these years to protect her own young.
Rema is the serpent, cold and calculating--she will never understand her sister's choice and takes every opportunity thrown her way to undo it.
Nida was the swan, with all the hollow, fabled beauty of her dying song.
Rema is the serpent, and she knows damn well when another one has struck.
Nida was the swan--in the end, a symbol of royalty, and loyalty, a prize and a catalyst for those who held her, once upon a time.
Rema is the serpent--while her relationship with her sister may have shattered long ago, and while of course there are more important factors at play, it can never be said that vengeance for that one most personal murder isn't vital to her now.
