Story: The Guest List
Rating: PG
Characters: Mel, Vor
More than anything, Mel wanted Isshiri at his wedding. The only problem was...well, it had been years, but there had been a time...
It might make things awkward.
"You should know," he said, then shifted. "I was...uh, for a real long time, I was in love with Isshiri."
Vor blinked and looked up from where he was paring down his family list to the most essential connections--Mel's own list had half the work done for him, since it was mostly made up of Kes and Lady Riluke and other people he'd come close to during the War. He didn't have any close relatives left, after all, and Artwick didn't seem to know quite what to do with a oathbreaker-turned-war-hero whose closest kin had turned out to be...well.
"Are you in love with him now?"
Mel shook his head. "No. Not for years now. Well, not like--he's like a...I wish he were my kin, you know?" It'd been that way since he'd met Vor, to tell the truth.
"Yeah. And you love me?" Vor said, with a smile.
He flushed. "More than anythin'."
"Then I don't see the problem," he said. "Look, Mel...I know trust don't come easy to you, and with reason. And I know how important he is to you, and how much it'll mean for him to be there for you. But I trust you, 'til the end. Past is past. You love me now, and picked me for your future. That's more'n enough for me." He leaned across the table and kissed Mel softly. "Besides. I'm lookin' forward to meetin' him. S'long as he doesn't bring his mother along."
"Oh, gods." Mel had met Crown Princess Kesshare exactly once, and that was more than enough. "No, I don't think he'll bring her." He smiled. "Thank you."
"And, hey--if he comes up to you and says he likes boys all of a sudden...come talk to me, and we'll make it work, yeah?" He arched one eyebrow. "If it comes to it, from what I've heard about him, I'd be willin' to share."
Mel flushed dark at the not altogether unpleasing mental image and turned back to his guest list with a faint cough of embarrassment, but he smiled, too, relieved. "He won't. But...thank you for that."
"Any time," Vor said cheerfully, then turned back to his own list, humming faintly to himself as he sorted through his relations.
