For a Little While
Story: For a Little While
Year: 981 FY
Characters: Mel, Dallu, Derin, Kesu
Warnings: References to ostracism/oblique references to Kit's crimes
Mel sat at the edge of the cave where he slept--right on the beach, where he and Derin could be close, but sheltered from the wind and the cold--watching his bondmate play with the Northerner's bear. The two of them seem to have buried any ill-will as soon as their humans had decided to cooperate.
Dallu was still asleep, curled up at the back of the cave. Mel wasn't quite sure how he felt about that--the knowledge that someone was there behind him, after so long. On a ship, everyone lived in close quarters, practically in each other's pockets, but he'd gotten...not used to it, but...
It was...nice, not being alone anymore. But given his crimes...he couldn't help but feel it would be that much worse, when Dallu left. Which he would, he would need to go down to the Islands and find whatever Captain he was down here for, and Mel couldn't follow.
It had been nice, for a few hours, to have a little taste of human companionship, to have someone actually close while he slept, since Derin couldn't be. But now all he could think about was that he was going to lose that, all over again.
"Good morning," Dallu said softly, and Mel jumped.
The Northerner smiled. "They look happy."
"Yeah," Mel said. "S'good, Derin'n me have been alone for a while."
He nodded, then tilted his head, considering. "We could stay, at least for a bit."
He blinked. "Don't you have to go find your Captain?"
"Of course. Eventually." Dallu smiled. "But I like you, and Kesu likes Derin. Staying a week or two after the crossing...it'll be good for us. For all of us."
:Tell him yes, love, please?: Derin said. :He's right.:
"Thanks," Mel said, and smiled a little bit back. "That'd be nice."
It still wouldn't last forever, and it would still make things that much harder when he left, but he'd take it, while it lasted. It would be something to hold on to, in the long, lonely nights to follow.
He turned his focus back to the ocean, to Derin splashing at Kesu who dodged more artfully than his size would indicate.
Derin and Dallu were right. This would be good for him.
This could make it all bearable, at least for a little while.
